act 1 scene 1

hamlet-act 1 scene 1

Outside Elsinore Castle in Denmark Bernardo and Francisco are on watch.  It is so dark that the two men can't see each other so Bernardo calls out 'who's there?' once they realise the other is also a watchman they relax so Francisco decides to go to bed.  Then Bernardo is joined by Marcellus and Horatio.  Bernardo and Marcellus urge Horatio to stay with them because they want to discuss what they have seen over the past couple of nights.  After they explain the sightings (that involved the ghost of the recently murdered king) the ghost suddenly appears before the men they saw that he wore the same armour as the king did in all his battles.  Horatio thought the ghost could have been a warning of misfortune for denmark.  Horatio tries to speak to the ghost but it stays silent.  Just as the crow crows the ghost disappears.  Horatio suggests that they tell Hamlet.
